SUMMER PLANNING SESSION

Two weeks ago I traveled to Darlington to attend a new hire meeting at the district office to finalize paperwork for payroll and benefits. At this time we also took our district ID pictures and mine is absolutely horrendous! Hopefully they will let me take a new one next year. During this meeting I realized how much I still do not feel like an adult even though I can now say that I have a college degree. When we started talking about retirement plans and investing, etc., all I kept thinking was "how much would these other teachers judge me if I called my mom and asked her what to do." Don't worry, I didn't call my mom in the middle of the meeting.

After the meeting, I stopped by one of my schools to see if the bookkeeper had an inventory sheet of instruments and music already in possession by the school or to start to create my own. And I realized in those few hours that I spent looking through my classroom and creating a personal inventory sheet how long of a process it is going to be to get the classroom in order by August 17th.

Amen.

This past Wednesday, July 22, I celebrated finishing my summer course (the last course needed for a special education TMD add-on certification) by traveling again to Darlington for a summer planning session at my 3rd through 5th grade school. I was able to meet all other faculty members including the two additional new staff members. We spent the better part of the day discussing school review results from last year's 5th grade students and parents, improving test scores, and teacher hand book revisions.

We are starting the year off with a Harry Potter themed Accelerated Reader assembly. Each grade is going to be a different house, our PE teacher is going to create a wizarding athletic event, and our principal is even going to dress up as  Headmistress Dumbledore! And probably most exciting for me was that I got my class schedule and calendar with performance dates which I will describe in more detail in a separate post. I was then told by the guidance counselor that the faculty and staff like to eat (which is good, because I love to eat!) and so we went dutch treat at Bizzell's Food and Spirits in Hartsville. I highly recommend their double philly cheesesteak! It was the perfect amount of meat, cheese, and peppers!!
